Have an old car that's not actually yours sitting around your Halifax property? Maybe you inherited a vehicle or purchased a used car without transferring registration. Whatever the case, scrap my car in Halifax that you don’t legally own requires some extra steps.

Obtain Power of Attorney

If the registered owner of the vehicle is still alive, have them grant you power of attorney. This authorizes you to manage their affairs and property legally on their behalf. Get the POA agreement in writing, signed and witnessed.

Apply for Vehicle Transfer

Visit Access Nova Scotia and fill out transfer papers to put the car ownership fully in your name. Submit the required documentation and fees to process the new vehicle registration.

Verify Ownership Status

If the registered owner is deceased, provide the scrap yard with copies of the death certificate and will, along with your photo ID. This proves you have inherited or been granted ownership of the vehicle.

Notify Registered Owner

If selling a car still registered to someone else, provide notice to the registered owner and get written acknowledgement from them approving the sale for scrap. This protects you from potential issues down the road.

Cancel Existing Registration

Before scrapping the car, complete the Notice of Vehicle Destruction form to cancel any existing registration. Provide this documentation to the salvage yard as proof the registration has been voided.

Acquire Bill of Sale

When sale payment is provided by the scrap dealer, make sure to get proper documentation like the bill of sale or receipt with transaction details, price paid, and vehicle identification information.

Sign Over Title

On the Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP), complete the transfer/sale section declaring yourself as the seller, even if you are not the registered owner. The scrap yard will fill out and sign the buyer's portion.

By following these steps, you can ensure the car is properly transferred into your name legally before scrapping. This will avoid any compliance headaches or disputes.
